5 Essential tips for success in the dog show ring

Then it was time for another blog post. My ambition was at first to do one a week but from now on I will do one a month instead due to lack of time and also finding interesting and worth reading topics. This time I will share some points that are worth thinking about and that you can prepare for before you go with your dog(s) to a dog show.
Stepping into the show ring is an exhilarating experience for any handler, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your journey. To help you bring your A-game and make the most of every moment, here are my top tips for achieving success in the ring:
1. Know your breed standard inside and out
Every breed has its unique standard, and understanding yours is key to showcasing your dog’s strengths. Study the details—movement, structure, and temperament. Then, practice presenting these attributes in a way that highlights your dog’s best features while minimizing any faults.
2. Perfect your presentation
Flawless presentation starts at home. Invest time in grooming, conditioning, and training to ensure your dog looks their absolute best. But don’t forget about your presentation! A well-fitted suit, polished shoes, and a confident demeanor can make all the difference. You and your dog are a team, and a professional appearance builds a winning impression. Judges want everything to flow smoothly and showing that you are on top of and familiar with all the elements increases your chances that the judge will see what he or she needs in the limited time available.
3. Master the art of handling
Handling is as much about connection as it is about technique. Practice gaiting, stacking, and free-stacking until you and your dog move as one. Remember, the best handlers are subtle, letting their dogs take center stage while skillfully guiding them to shine.
4. Read the judge and the ring
Every judge has their own style, and reading their cues can help you adapt in the moment. Watch their movements and preferences—do they focus on movement or spend more time examining the stack? Stay aware of the ring layout, pace, and positioning to avoid distractions and present smoothly. If you have more dogs being judged before you, see what the judge wants them to do and prepare to have the same demands placed on you.
5. Stay positive and have fun
The energy you bring to the ring sets the tone for your performance. Stay calm, upbeat, and focused—even if things don’t go as planned. Celebrate small victories and learn from each experience. At the end of the day, your dog feels your energy, so make it a positive one! Your dog often mirrors what you do, so if you are unfocused or stressed, your dog will most likely follow suit.
The road to success in the show ring is a journey filled with challenges, growth, and incredible memories. With preparation, passion, and the right mindset, you and your dog can shine at every event.
