Curious about how an European Dog show would be like?
Share
In just over a week, the European Dog Show for 2024 will be held in Slovenia. Many people
have made sure to train their dogs, show them well in advance to feel extra prepared and not
least to keep the fur and condition of the dogs in absolute top class.
Exhibiting your dog at a European Winner show is a unique and exciting experience, which
offers both challenges and moments of joy for both the dog and the owner.
The event attracts participants from all over the continent and is a prestigious event in the dog world. The atmosphere is almost electric and there is no mistaking that this is a very special exhibition.
You who have never been to a European exhibition but want to participate some time. Here
is a brief insight into what you need to think about beforehand.
Training
The dog needs to be well trained and used to showing itself in the ring. This means that the
dog must be able to move correctly at the judge´s assessment, stand neatly in line-up, and
be relaxed despite a lot of people and other dogs. You should have exhibited your dog
several times before. Coming to a European dog show as a beginner is not recommended as
both judges and other participants expect that everyone in the ring knows exactly what is
expected and the competition is extremely tough. Most of the time, it is the truly best dogs
from each country that fight for the prestigious title.
Fur care, presentation and outfit
Depending on the breed, this can be a huge part of the preparation. This can mean anything
from bathing and brushing to clipping or trimming to make the dog look perfect. Among so
many top-class dogs, it can often be the small details that makes the difference. This also
applies to you as a handler. A nice outfit is the finishing touch that makes you and your dog
look homogeneous together. Entering the ring with a well-kept dog that knows how to show
itself and with a handler who, with its outfit, signals that he or she has taken the competition
very seriously, undoubtedly provides the best conditions for your dog to receive the attention
of the judge that everyone desires.
Administrative preparations
Participants often need to register well in advance. Its common that you register your dog 9-
12 months in advance. Hotels are quickly fully booked a year in advance, so make sure to
plan and book well ahead. Make sure all the dog´s vaccinations and papers are in order.
Depending on which country you are traveling to, different rules apply for bringing in your
dog, so do your homework well and find out what’s required.
Arrival at the exhibition
Often these are large arenas or exhibition halls that hold thousands of people and dogs from
all over Europe. The atmosphere is lively with many stalls, vendors, and visitors. The dog
must be kept in the best possible shape during the trip, and it is important to ensure that it is
comfortable and stress-free. Each breed has a specific schedule, and it´s important to keep
an eye on when it´s time to show your dog. There can be long waits and early mornings, so
patience is key.
In the ring
The dog is judged both individually and in competition with other dogs. The competition is
very tough as only the best dogs from different countries participate. A European Winner title
is very prestigious and can provide great opportunities for breeding and future exhibitions.
The owner and the dog must work as a team. Keeping your nerves in check and managing
stress is important, both to perform at your best and for the dog to feel safe.
Results and the experience
If the dog performs well, it can win various titles and certificates. These can be decisive for
the dog´s future in breeding or other exhibitions. European dog shows are also a chance to
meet other breeders, dog enthusiasts and network. It is a place where you can exchange
experiences, get tips and learn more about your breed.
After the show
It is often a long and intense day, both physically and mentally. Regardless of the result, the
feeling of having exhibited in such a large arena is often very rewarding. For many,
participating in such a prestigious competition is a milestone. Showing your dog at a
European dog show is a highlight for many dog owners. It takes a lot of preparation,
commitment and passion for the dog shown sport, but the rewards – both in terms of
experience and possible success – can be priceless.
